The art of portraiture approached its apex during the sixteenth century in Europe with the discovery of oil painting when the old masters developed and refined techniques that remain unsurpassed to this day. The ascendance of nonrepresentational art in the middle of the twentieth century displaced these venerable skills, especially in academic art circles. Fortunately for aspiring artists today who wish to learn the methods that allowed the Old Masters to achieve the luminous color and subtle t

Vancouver Painters Guide – The Basic Information about House Painting

Posted in Painting on May 12th, 2012 by alexander – Comments Off

Article by Kassel Painting

House painting is difficult not in terms of labor but in terms of decision making. One must choose the right balance between harmony and individuality. The house must not look too clashing when the adjoining houses are taken into consideration. But it also must not look too subdued that it gets boring.

When painting a house, the three major factors one must consider are:Type of house to be paintedColor of the house plannedType of paint to be used

After careful planning with these factors in mind, house painting should be easy.

House Type

Is the house an old house and painting it is more for restorative purposes? If so, the color scheme is already laid out although it sometimes is difficult to find a right match. There is a growing trend to use modern colors on older houses. When painted with a modern color, the house does take in a more distinct and attractive look.

Also consider that houses built prior to 1978 would have a higher chance that it was painted with lead based paint. Lead based paint is a serious health risk and extreme caution must be used when stripping it from the house. It is recommended to consult professionals when it comes to lead paint.

A small house usually would look bigger when painted with light colors, especially white. Conversely, a dark color may make a house look smaller but can be used to accentuate small details that would most probably blend in when using lighter colors.

Color

The main factor when it comes to house painting is what color to use. Usually the two most popular color groups when it comes to house painting are Neutrals and Naturals. Neutral colors evoke a cozy, relaxing feeling. They blend well with the surroundings and won’t really clash with the neighbor’s house. The most popular neutral colors are white, off-white, and cream. For a more modern neutral color, Lilac, is one to consider. Natural colors are colors one sees around nature. Even when using subdued naturals, the house evokes a sophisticated look. Natural colors run the gamut from Air (sky blue), Earth (earth), Water (Navy blue), to Fire (Red).

One also should consider the accent to be used. Accent is the secondary and tertiary colors used on the house trimmings such as the pillar, gate, door, etc.

Paint

Once the color is selected, the type of paint used should also be considered. Primarily, the material of the house should dictate what kind of paint to use. Paint comes in two types; Latex and Alkyd. Latex is water based and Alkyd is oil based.

Latex paint is the most common as it dries quickly, odorless and is environmentally friendly. Alkyd paint has a smoother appearance and is best when a paint sprayer is used.

The exterior part of the house is what is exposed to the environment. The paint should withstand heat, rain, snow, and the most extreme of weathers. Temperature conditions also affect the paint used.

Before painting the house, a paint primer must be used. A paint primer guarantees that the paint will grip to the surface of the house when applied. There are 3 types of primer, Alkyd, Acrylic, and Tinted Shellac. Depending on the material used, the correct type of primer must be used.

House painting is fun when one understands the technical principles behind it. A professional house painter would feel comfortable discussing the process when the home owner has prior knowledge of house painting intricacies.

There are a lot of things that you need to consider if you want to be successful with painting your house. If you want to save yourself from the tedious task of house painting, then Kassel Painting Ltd. is the best Vancouver painters that you can contact.

Painting Tips

Posted in Painting on April 5th, 2012 by alexander – Comments Off

Article by Paul Langan Painting

Here are a few painting tips that should help you out if you want to tackle that painting project by yourself. Remember, we’re here if you get into trouble or if you just don’t want to deal with the hassle, but if you want to have a go at it yourself, please read the following tips:

Sand, Sand And Sand Some MoreAny surface you are going to paint on has got to be flat. It literally cannot be flat enough. The slightest ripple or texture can cause an annoying seam that will nag at you for years to come. When you think you’ve sanded enough, sand it once more, seriously. Then completely inspect it, make sure all dust is removed, apply a coat of paint, wait and inspect before proceeding.

Cleanliness Is Next To GodlinessA dirty work area is never a good thing unless you are a pig farmer. When it comes to painting, a clean, organized work area is mandatory. Spilled drinks or smudges can destroy all of your hard work, loose garbage can blow into a wall, and the last thing that you want is to get moisture or dirt between the wall and the paint you just spent all of that time sanding.

Buy More Paint Than You NeedWhile we have a formula for painting a room, we do this professionally and we keep large stocks, paint color mixtures on record, and distributors that can make almost any paint. As you are doing this yourself and don’t likely do it too often, buy enough to allow for mistakes, AND to allow for touch ups down the road. A new coat of paint can peel or chip, and you might not find that mixture you chose at a later date if the hardware store doesn’t carry or make it anymore.

Tape Is Your FriendAnd it can save you from making annoying, time consuming, and even costly mistakes. Tape all corners and seems, sills, anything where you want a crisp even line, that way when your brush goes out of bounds, you don’t get a smudge, when you remove the tape, your line will be perfect. Be careful when removing that tape too. And use a tarp over the entire room. You’d be amazed how paint can travel away from where you are working.

Choose a good nylon or polyester filament brush when painting with latex paint or any water-based paint. When applying oil based paints, varnishes or lacquers, choose a good natural bristle brush.

How to Finalize the Painting Process

This is the final step in a painting process. Follow carefully the instructions below for a professional result.

Instructions

1

Priming the surface

Most paints are designed to be used over some type of priming agent. The old finish, provided its condition is good, is usually all that’s necessary. But in many cases, you’ll need to use an undercoat. Here are the situations requiring a primer, followed by the particular primer to use:

Unpainted wood to be finished with an enamel or oil-based paint—use a flat oil-based enamel undercoat.

Unpainted wood to be finished with latex paint—use an oil-based undercoat.

Unpainted plaster or gypsum board—use latex paint or latex primer sealer.

Unpainted metal—apply a rust-inhibitive primer (each metal has its own particular primer).

Rough, coarse, or porous masonry—use a block filler, a penetrating coating that fills holes.

Dark-colored existing paint to be covered by a light-colored finish coat—apply an extra coat of desired color or a primer.

Light-colored existing paint to be covered by a dark-colored finish coat—use two coats of dark-colored paint.

2

Stirring the paint

When you buy a paint, most dealers stir the paint for you, especially if the paint you are buying is custom colored, not just ordinary white which is the normal colors of paints.

If the paint has been allowed to settle before application, though, it’s best to stir it again just before you start painting, unless it’s one of the newly developed paints that should be stirred. At any rate, check the label first.

Stir the paint thoroughly until there are no signs of color separation. If you are using varnish or polyurethane, never shake the cans because bubbles will be created which last between 4 and 5 days. You will be encountering problems of how to get rid of them.

3

Painting the ceiling

If you want to start your painting work from the ceiling, by all means do it. You must have a large roller at hand. Make ready an extension pole of 3 to 4 feet long, or you can make a scaffolding by placing a wood plank between a sawhorse and a ladder.

Points to remember in painting ceiling

Make sure you have enough light so you can see how completely you are covering. In order to avoid lap marks, meaning, painting over any edge that may have been dried already, paint the ceiling non-stop. In painting ceiling, do not ignore to wear a hat. Start painting at the corner and working across the direction of the shortest distance. Divide the area you will be painting in rectangles. Begin the first section by using a brush or corner roller to paint a narrow strip next to the wall line and around any fixtures. Then, finish the section with a roller, overlapping any brush marks.

4

Painting the walls

Mentally divide the walls into 3-foot-square sections, starting from a corner at the ceiling line and working down the wall. As with ceilings, paint the edge of each section with a brush or corner roller along the ceiling line, corners, and fixtures or edges of openings. Finish each section with a roller or unloaded brush, overlapping any brush marks.

At the bottom edge along the floor or baseboard, use a brush and paint guide, again overlapping edges with a roller. Return to ceiling line and work down again in successive 3-foot-square sections.

Tips & Warnings

Important Reminders:

1) If you can’t paint all the walls in one day, finish the wall you’re working on before you stop so you can avoid having to paint over dry edges later.

2) If the odor of the paint bothers you, mix a few drops of vanilla or a commercial paint fragrance additive into the paint.
